Il genio di Pazienza in mostra a Bologna

The genius of Pazienza on display in Bologna.

Twenty-four years after the last anthological exhibition dedicated to him in the capital city of Emlia in 1997 and after many months of closure due to the pandemic, the creative genius of Andrea Pazienza, the cartoonist whose panels changed the world of comics forever arrived at Palazzo Albergati in Bologna on the 7th of May 2021. He moved to the shadow of the Two Towers in 1974 to enrol in the Department of Drama, Art and Music Studies at the University of Bologna and started his career on the pages of Alter Alter in 1977, outlining the traits of his most creative and stimulating period until 1984. Born in 1956, cartoonist, draftsman, illustrator and painter: Andrea Pazienza was - undoubtedly the greatest exponent of that all-Italian storytelling so free, at the service of relentless and unprecedented stream of consciousness. Over 100 artworks from the archives of those close to him such as his brother, sister wife and others, between original comic panels and paintings made with various medium ranging from felt tip pens, tempera, to pencils and acrylic colours, are on show. A selection of beautiful and historic images by the great photographer and visual artist, Enrico Scuro, also enriches the exhibition. Starting from his artistic output based on three pillars, Pentothal, Zanardi and Pompeo, the exhibition is a journey through the life of the artist in the streets of Bologna heated by the student movements in 1977. An account of revolts, love, political wars and disturbance experienced by a generation of marvellous dreamers who have the ways of the cross (calvary) to revolution and freedom inscribed on their skin. Held under the aegis the Comune di Bologna – Cultura è Bologna, produced and organised by Piuma in association with Arthemisia and curated by ARF! Festival di storie, segni & disegni, the exhibition has been produced with the contribution of Fondazione Cultura e Arte, an instrumentality of Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale, chaired by Professor Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele, thanks to which children under the age of 12 may enjoy a complimentary ticket and secondary school and university students a reduced ticket price. The event sees BilBOlbul International Comics Festival and RIFF Rete Italiana Festival di Fumetto as event partners and is recommended by Sky Arte. The exhibition is open until the 26th of September 2021.
