The Chilrenwindcup returns for the young patients in the Paediatric Onco-Haematology ward at the Ospedale Civile of Brescia

The Childenwindcup will return even in 2020, under the aegis, as usual, of the Gargnano Sailing Club, Yacht Club Cortina d’Ampezzo and Fondazione Terzo Pilastro-Internazionale.

The day will be dedicated to sailing and will see the friends and families of the children from the Paediatric Onco-Haematology ward at the Ospedale Civile of Brescia, as in the past thirteen years.  There will also be a delegation from the Associazione Bambino Emopatico (ABE) the group of voluntary workers who organize care, schooling and motor rehabilitation activities in the ward.  The Chief Physician, Professor Fulvio Porta, will summarise his research, which just before Christmas 2019, led to the first transplant from an external donor in Italy and the fifth in the world.  Weather permitting this little boy and his family will be there too.

Everyone will board the boat for the regatta that will be organised by the Gargnano Sailing Club and Cortina Yacht Club Cortina for the 27th of September, following the health guidelines contained in the protocols issued by the Government and the Italian Sailing Federation.  The children (who will attend with some restrictions) will be supported by the Covid Heroes who fought in the intensive care rooms in the Ospedale Civile and the Ospedale Poliambulanza in Brescia and the Ospedale Papa Giovanni in Bergamo.

In the water we will have the two maxi X 40 catamarans (length 13 metres) that were the ‘protagonists’ 12 months ago again, plus the Dolphin fleet belonging to the Gargnano Sailing Club and the Cortina Yacht Club with doctors and nurses on board.

A small party by invitation will be held (large gatherings are out of the question) as usual, a live TV broadcast and a live Webcast in which all the protagonists may describe this great adventure as a sailing challenge or maybe more. There will also be the Italian University (Turin, Padova, Palermo, Venice, Rome) boats in the water to compete for the title of the regatta ‘Mille e una Vela’.

The Chairman of Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Internazionale, Professor Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele, affirms, “This year Fondazione Terzo Pilastro is delighted to support the Gargnano Sailing Club and the Cortina Yacht Club in this important event that combines sailing and solidarity along the shores of Lake Garda.  As I often maintain, sports should be a means of closeness and support for others, a privileged way of donating a smile and an opportunity for those most in need: in this case, the young haematology patients of the Children’s Hospital of Brescia and their families.  In a year characterised by the COVID-19 health emergency, promoting and fostering outdoor activities of great social value assumes a more important significance.”

The regatta will be held on the weekend of the 26th– 27th of September at Bogliaco di Gargnano (Lake Garda), in the small harbour of Centomiglia and the Marina of Bogliaco, in order to spread out the people involved in this important event.    Hence the Childrenwindcup will show the social spirit of the missions of ABE, Gargnano Sailing Club, Cortina Yacht Club Fondazione Terzo Pilastro-Internazionale.  Sports merge with the medical world and sailing becomes an incredible rehabilitation tool.
