The prisoner’s church in Porto Azzurro renovated

The seventeenth century Church of San Giacomo Martire, located inside the prison fortress in Porto Azzurro on the Isle of Elba will be reconstructed with a significant contribution from Fondazione Terzo Pilastro – Italia e Mediterraneo.

The church has been closed to worship since 2004 because the building is unstable, and in order to attract attention, Francesco D’Anselmo, the prisons’s Director, even wrote a letter to Pope Francis.  The inmates will be involved in the refurbishment works.
